Massage therapy is a type of treatment in which a trained and certified medical professional manipulates the soft tissues of your body — muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin — using varying degrees of pressure and movement.
At Pelvic & Orthopedic Physical Therapy Specialists we often integrate massage therapy in our treatment plans for a wide range of diagnoses. We feel massage therapy compliments physical therapy treatment in many ways including calming the nervous system, improving circulation to injured tissues, reducing pain and improving flexibility.
Our massage therapist, Miriam Zumstein, received her massage therapy certification at the Cortiva Institute–Chicago School of Massage Therapy in 2006. Her specialty is Hanna Somatic Education, a form of neuromuscular re-education that goes directly to the root cause of most chronic muscular pain using slow movements to regain awareness and motor control of muscles. Miriam’s spectrum of massage techniques range from deep to gentle and she always ensures that client expectations and comfort level are met. She has experience working with athletes, cancer survivors, elderly clients and those with scoliosis, repetitive movement strain and postural imbalances. Her massage modalities include myofascial release, trigger point therapy, Swedish relaxation massage, massage cupping and pregnancy massage.
